Managing director of Inverness plumbing and renewable energy firm crowned Green Energy winner

The successful young entrepreneur who founded and runs the McInnes Group, which incorporates both McInnes Plumbing and Heating and McInnes Renewables, has been named the winner of the Rising Star category of the Scottish Green Energy Awards 2016.

Lachlan McInnes, managing director of the plumbing and heating and renewable business, which is headquartered in Inverness, beat off stiff competition from eight of the country’s top young entrepreneurs to win the prestigious title.

Lachlan was singled out for having already made an outstanding impact in the renewables industry.

He was put forward for the prestigious award after being crowned a winner at the Young Professional Green Energy Awards in May this year.

He won the Business Development Award after achieving outstanding results in a new business venture experiencing growth and success.

Lachlan, 30, carved out his business empire after being made redundant from his apprenticeship in 2011. He paid to complete his own apprenticeship and founded McInnes Plumbing and Heating Ltd. Lachlan’s dad bought the determined entrepreneur his first van and he slowly managed to develop a good client base across the Highlands, mainly through word of mouth.

In 2013 Lachlan then identified a gap in the market to supply innovative renewable energy to customers across Scotland, and McInnes Renewables Ltd was born. Renewable energy is something Lachlan has become very passionate about.

Lachlan now employs a total of 10 staff and four apprentices, and the business has experienced huge growth in last 12 months, with turnover now exceeding a seven-figure sum.

The glitzy Scottish Renewables award-ceremony, which celebrates innovators and leaders in green energy and showcases the very best and brightest working in the sector, took place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on 1st December.

It was attended by Keith Brown MSP, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Jobs and Fair Work.

Lachlan said: “I am surprised but absolutely delighted to have won the Rising Star category and to be ranked alongside such talented entrepreneurs.

“Renewable energy is something I am extremely passionate about, and I always strive to offer customers across Scotland the best, and most effective renewable energy choices.

“At the McInnes Group we believe that innovative energy choices must be sustainable and the team strive to ensure that we offer the latest technology available in the sector to our customers.

“To be recognised in the Scottish Green Awards is a real honour and something that myself and all the staff at the McInnes Group are extremely proud of.”

Niall Stuart, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “Once again the winners of the Scottish Green Energy Awards show the huge amount of creativity and determination within our sector.

“Each and every one is playing their part in the massive transformation that is underway in Scotland’s energy sector and wider economy.”
